Film review | Crazy, Stupid, Love - Carell & co smarten up this La-La Land love-in
Romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love spins its plot around the amorous follies of a bunch of LA folk, young and old, but the movie proves to be far smarter – and sweeter – than its contrived set-up would suggest thanks to a classy cast led by Steve Carell, Julianne Moore and Ryan Gosling.
The story’s biggest chump is Carell’s suburban family man, who’s sent reeling after his wife (Moore) confesses to an affair and calls for a divorce. He’s soon pickling his sorrows in nightly cocktails at his local bar, where Gosling’s smooth-talking pick-up artist takes pity and decides to give him tips on how to charm women.
Watching Carell’s makeover from Mr Frump to Mr Cool is a hoot, as is his one-night stand with Marisa Tomei’s daffy singleton. With further twisted plot strands involving Emma Stone’s young lawyer, Analeigh Tipton’s teen babysitter and Jonah Bobo’s love-struck 13-year-old adding to the fun, this is a romcom you’d be crazy to miss.
On general release from 23rd September.
