New Year's Day
Treasure Island
Sky 1 HD, 7pm, New Year's Day
A mean and moody reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale. The all-star cast - including a cameo by Donald Sutherland - is led by Eddie Izzard as ruthless pirate Long John Silver, who has in his sights a stash of gold buried on an island. But he must keep his band of men happy until the time is right to take over the ship marshalled by wily Captain Smollett (Philip Glenister) and Squire Trelawney (Rupert Penry-Jones). Young Jim Hawkins (newcomer Toby Regbo) must decide who to trust as things turn ugly on the high seas... Concludes tomorrow.
The Hotel
Channel 4, 8pm, New Year's Day
Back with a new hotel, new staff and new chaos, this hit fly-on-the-wall series goes way beyond the reception desk of The Grosvenor Hotel in Torquay. Manager Mark and his staff, including Alison and Christian, are tonight battling against all sorts, including their colleagues, to ensure that Faye and Mike's wedding runs smoothly. But with disasters at almost every turn, and as Faye threatens more than once that she won't go through with the wedding, can the staff manage to pull off the big day without a hitch?
Sherlock
BBC1, 8.10pm, New Year's Day
The much-heralded return of this modern take on the classic tale lives up to the hype as this opening episode, A Scandal in Belgravia, bristles with energy and wit. Sherlock wants a new case, but instead he meets a woman who captivates him like no other - much to the bemusement of Dr John Watson (Martin Freeman). Irene Adler (Lara Pulver) has a whip-smart mind and state secrets in her phone that Sherlock's brother, Mycroft (Mark Gatiss), is desperate to retrieve. What follows is a battle of wits, fizzing with sexual tension and packed with clever references...
Absolutely Fabulous
BBC1, 9.40pm, New Year's Day
Tonight Edina and Patsy (pitch-perfect performances from Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley) meet a French film star whom Saffy admires. Eddy hopes that taking her on as a client could earn her some kudos and, more importantly, some much-needed income. There's just one teensy problem: her client's talents aren't everything they seem to be... In the spirit of Crimbo, we've been asked not to reveal the names of the guest stars, but do look out for some big names. Unmissable, sweeties!
Hacks
Channel 4, 10pm, New Year's Day
Set at a fictional tabloid newspaper, this hour-long one-off comedy pokes fun at the phone-hacking scandal and the depths the tabloids will sink to in order to get that story. It boasts an impressive cast, with veteran actor Michael Kitchen as the big boss and Little Dorrit star Claire Foy as the stressed-out bully of an editor who loves nothing more than shouting down the phone and making office juniors cry. Celia Imrie plays the royal correspondent who gets all her stories from hacking into Prince Harry's phone as he relaxes at a strip club, while Alexander Armstrong is a politician hoping to win the support of the paper. You really couldn't make it up!
