New Year's Eve

Pride & Prejudice

Pride & Prejudice ITV1, 1.45pm, New Year's Eve
Costume dramas don't come much better than this fabulous adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel of love, money and manners centred on the five daughters of Mr and Mrs Bennet. Keira Knightley is superb as the feisty Elizabeth Bennet and fully deserved an Oscar nomination, although Matthew Macfadyen makes for a dull Darcy. Judi Dench, Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland lend stellar support and Tom Hollander almost steals the show as desperate Mr Collins. A smashing film for New Year's Eve daytime viewing.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BBC1, 7.25pm, New Year's Eve
Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom return with a bang in the third of the increasingly silly but always entertaining swashbuckling high-seas capers. This time, Depp's Cap'n Jack Sparrow tries to escape from Davy Jones' Locker and take on the might of villainous Cutler Beckett (Rev's Tom Hollander), who has decreed that he will bring the age of piracy to an end... Yo-ho-ho!

Morecambe & Wise

Morecambe & Wise BBC2, 8pm, New Year's Eve
The nostalgia starts with Paul Merton introducing archive footage in Morecambe & Wise: The Show What Paul Merton Did at 8pm. This is followed by a one-off drama (first shown last New Year's Day) about the beginnings of Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise's comedy partnership. Victoria Wood stars as Eric's mum, who pushed the entertainer towards a life on the stage. After Eric first met child star Ernie in 1939, the two formed a bond that would last until Eric's death in 1984. Daniel Rigby and Bryan Dick are amazing as the grown-up comics, while Jim Moir (aka Vic Reeves) gives a surprisingly subtle performance as Eric's dad. Then at 10.30pm Michael Parkinson looks back at his 1972 interview with the comedy duo.

Alan Carr's New Year Specstacular

Alan Carr's New Year Specstacular Channel 4, 9pm, New Year's Eve
The Chatty Man has taken over C4's headquarters for a New Year's knees-up and his guest list is bursting with famous faces, including Micky Flanagan, Olly Murs, Gok Wan, Kirstie Allsopp and Heston Blumenthal. All eyes will be on one particular partygoer, though - Alesha Dixon made quite an impression on Alan's show recently after glugging wine straight from the bottle and getting a bit, er, loose-lipped about the goings-on at Strictly. As well as music from the Ting Tings and JLS, there'll be spoof sketches and a look ahead to 2012 with astrologer Shelley von Strunckel. We predict a few sore heads tomorrow...

Jools' Annual Hootenanny

Jools's Annual Hootenanny BBC2, 11.15pm, New Year's Eve
Say farewell to 2011 and see in the New Year with Jools Holland's annual music-fest, now in its 19th year. You can always guarantee a lively knees-up with Jools and joining the music maestro and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra this time round are some of the year's biggest names including Jessie J and James Morrison. Jools will also be welcoming to the stage Cyndi Lauper and Sixties icon Sandie Shaw. And, in time-honoured tradition, the 1st Battalion Scots Guards will be on hand with their pipes and drums to welcome the New Year. There really is nowhere else to be this New Year's Eve!

New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve ITV1, 11.45pm/BBC1, 11.50pm New Year's Eve
Big Ben is showered with fireworks and attention tonight as revellers everywhere prepare their toasts, link arms and get ready to count backwards in the build-up to the clock striking 12. Turn on the telly to hear the famous big bongs with ITV News and Countdown to 2012 (11.45pm) covering the spectacular display over the Thames. The BBC are also making the most out of midnight as Jake Humphrey takes to the streets of London in New Year Live 2011 on BBC1 (11.50pm).
