Coronation Street stars have paid rich tribute to Jean Alexander, who played Hilda Ogden for more than two decades, and who died yesterday aged 90

Generations of Coronation Street stars have paid tribute to Jean Alexander, who portrayed Hilda Ogden for over two decades, after her death aged 90.

Sally Dynevor, whose character Sally Webster lodged with Hilda and her on-screen husband Stan after her arrival on the cobbles in 1986, said Jean was “a wonderful woman, and such an amazing and talented actress”.

Jennie McAlpine, who has portrayed Fiz Brown since 2001, and her on-screen mother Wendi Peters also tweeted their condolences.

Sean Tully actor Antony Cotton said Alexander was “magnificent”.

Georgia May Foote, who joined the cast as Katy Armstrong over two decades after Alexander’s departure, tweeted that Jean was an “incredible actress” while former Corrie writer Daran Little called her a “true friend”.

Jean left the cobbles in 1987 and joined the BBC sitcom Last of The Summer Wine as bric-a-brac shop owner Auntie Wainwright the following year, remaining on the programme until 2010. Her co-star Kate Robbins said acting alongside Jean was a “dream come true”.
