Coronation Street‘s Bill Roache made a final tearful farewell to his wife, the actress Sara Roache.
After a private funeral for friends and family, Sara’s life was celebrated at a public memorial service held in Cheshire.
Around 200 mourners flocked to the 13th century St Bartholomew’s Church in Wilmslow to pay their respects to the 58-year-old.
Soap veteran Bill welcomed the assembled throng into the church and began to pay tribute to his wife, but broke down saying: “I’ll get through it, I’ll get through it.”
He said: “When I first met Sara, 35 years ago, she was a young, beautiful, vibrant girl and only a few days ago she was still young, beautiful and vibrant – the perfect wife in every way.”
As well as friends and members of the public, Corrie cast and crew turned out to remember Sara and support her widower who has played Ken Barlow in the soap for nearly 50 years.
Stars attending the memorial service included Samia Smith, who plays Maria Connor, Ann Kirkbride, aka Deirdre Barlow, and Chris Gascoigne, who plays Ken’s son Peter Barlow. Shadow Chancellor George Osborne and and Coronation Street creator Tony Warren also paid their respects.
Sara, who was married to the soap legend for more than 30 years, died 10 days ago at home.
The cause of her death has not yet been released. She had not been ill and her death was unexpected – throwing her loved ones and the Coronation Street family into shock.
