Iconic brands will make their way to Weatherfield as part of an exterior set expansion on Coronation Street

ITV bosses have announced that Coronation Street’s fictional setting, Weatherfield, will get Costa Coffee and Co-op shop fronts, when the soap’s newly-extended set is introduced later this year.

Show bosses announced back in the Autumn that the outside set would be expanded to cope with the demands of filming six episodes a week. The new, larger set, is due to be ready for use in the Spring, and will mean that action takes place beyond the fictional Victoria Court.

The Costa Coffee and Co-op shops will be facades only – so viewers won’t see any scenes taking place inside the coffee shop and supermarket. However, bosses say that the brands will be integrated across the iconic programme, with the use of posters, bags and cups.

“The expansion of the Coronation Street set has given us a great opportunity to feature branded shop facades as more of Weatherfield is opened up to viewers,” says Mark Trinder, Sales Director of ITV.

“Incorporating product placement on this scale is something we have wanted to do for some time, and we’re delighted with this exciting opportunity.

“We’ve worked really closely with the Coronation Street team to make sure we’ve got a great brand fit for Co-op and Costa Coffee with the nation’s favourite soap, while still ensuring editorial integrity.”
