Coronation Street has announced the introduction of two explosive new characters who are set to cause fireworks on the cobbles – and especially in the Platt family.

Sean Ward (pictured on the left) will play Kylie Platt’s ex Callum and Oliver Farnworth takes on the role of Michael Rodwell’s son Gavin. Both have pasts that could really set the cat amongst the pigeons in the already fractured Platt household…

Callum is Max’s birth father and a character marked by his past misdemeanours, but his good-looking charm and dark edge can be impossible to resist.

Kylie will come face-to-face with her past when she goes digging for answers about Max’s medical condition and hunts down his dad Callum on her old stomping ground.

Viewers will see Callum lure Kylie back into the low life she left behind. Can she escape it again and bury her past once and for all?

Paula Lane, who plays Kylie, is expecting her first child and will be going on maternity leave at the end of the year. That means Kylie will have to disappear, too…

Now, Kylie has been devastated by Max’s ADHD diagnosis. She thinks it’s down to her – and maybe Callum.

Kylie already thinks she’s not worth much as a person. What if she thinks all she’s worth is the worthless man who fathered Max, ex-jailbird Callum? What if he becomes the reason Kylie leaves the Street?

Sean has already started filming his first few scenes with Paula.

Sean said: “I am delighted to have been given this unique opportunity to join such a brilliant and much-loved show,” he says. “It’s a great honour and it will be a professional challenge to play bad-boy Callum. I’m very much looking forward to working closely with Paula.”

Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn said: “Sean is already pulling off that holy grail of creating a character that, whilst dark and dangerous, also has a truly infectious charm and he’s going to be a fantastic character.”

Oliver, who is best known for his parts in Hollyoaks and Mr Selfridge, is the long-lost son of Les Dennis’s character, Michael, another ex-jailbird, who has just begun romancing Gail (Helen Worth).

Oliver’s also set to make his mark on the Platt family. Will he drag his dad off the straight and narrow? Is Gail going to be hurt all over again?

“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining the cast of Coronation Street,” says Oliver. “Having spent my childhood in the North, to be given the opportunity to return and work on such an iconic, popular TV show is a dream and feels like a natural homecoming. I can’t wait to tread the cobbles!”

Stuart added: “Sexy, confident, engaging and yet still with edge and depth, Oliver as an actor has got it all and I can’t wait to see Gavin light up our screens.”

Coronation Street continues on ITV, Monday, August 18, 7.30pm & 8.30pm.
