Kate Ford is so good at being Corrie’s mad, bad and dangerous Tracy Barlow – but Kate has revealed why she is happier with Tracy’s “small moments”

As Corrie’s bad girl Tracy Barlow, Kate Ford has been marrying, manipulating and murdering her way through the Street for 15 years.

She has tried to sell her baby, bumped off a boyfriend, faked a twin miscarriage and unwittingly committed arson and manslaughter.

But Kate, 40, reckons there is scope for even more scandal for Weatherfield’s super-bitch.

And ahead of her character’s 40th birthday this week, she joked to The Sun on Sunday: “She hasn’t been a prostitute yet — maybe she could open her own brothel.”

She added: “Tracy’s had an eventful 40 years, so it’s hard to choose a favourite moment. But her love life has been really good.

“Obviously a low point was when she killed one of them [Charlie Stubbs] and was jailed but things have got better.

“There’s very little that Tracy hasn’t done, she’s done most of the sensational stuff.

“That’s why it’s nice that she is going in a different direction at the moment. My scenes are more family-driven and real than they have been.”

Which has made Kate happier than she was with her role last year…

Despite insisting she has been happy with Tracy’s storylines overall, Kate admits she has not always seen eye to eye with the scriptwriters.

She said: “Tracy was harder to play for me last year, because she was becoming a bit one-dimensional, but this year she’s back on track.

“The stories are making her a bit more human again. And I like the fact that she doesn’t have a female arch-enemy at the moment.

“For a while the scriptwriters would have Tracy fight with someone, then they’d leave, and they’d give her another arch-enemy. It got a bit old.

“I always try to find reasons for what Tracy does, those small moments that explain why she has done something, even if that looks cruel.

“Otherwise when she does terrible things, I’m just playing the bad guy and it’s boring.

“But recently I haven’t had that. Instead, she’s got friendships.

“The big dramatic scenes might be good to watch but as an actress I prefer the more intricate scenes, the small moments, not the big ones.

“But that’s not to say she won’t ever do anything outrageous again.”

“One of my favourite scenes was when Tracy confessed to Deirdre that she’d killed Charlie Stubbs after he cheated on her.

“I worked so closely with Annie [Anne Kirkbride, who played Deirdre] on that scene. It was just the two of us. We rehearsed and we were given the time to do it.

“After 15 years, you forget scenes you’ve done. It’s bizarre — you forget you were ever there. But there are some you will always remember.”

“She was amazing on set. Fun when cameras weren’t rolling, word-perfect when they were. I loved her so much.”

Will Tracy still be on th Street at 80?

“You’ll have to wait and see. But I don’t think she’s run her course yet.”

Coronation Street continues on ITV, Monday, January 23, 7.30pm.
