Coronation Street star Craig Charles has revealed that Lloyd Mullaney will be forced to make some drastic changes to his lifestyle, following a heart attack.

The cab company co-owner has to learn to adopt a healthier attitude towards his diet and his other habits, after he collapses when taking part in a Weatherfield fun run. The scenes will be shown on the ITV soap on May 5.

The actor said on ITV’s Lorraine: “He does have to change his life. Lloyd has to start eating healthy, cutting down on the cigarettes, cutting down on the drinking, going to the gym. He’s got this new girlfriend now, Andrea (Hayley Tamaddon), and she starts looking after him.”

Craig admitted he thought TV bosses were hinting at his own lifestyle when he first read about the storyline.

“Basically it’s just the producer telling you that you’re getting a bit fat – that’s what I thought! I thought, ‘Well, after that, I’m going to have to go away and lose some weight!'” he continued.

The 49-year-old also revealed he hopes to keep juggling his role on Coronation Street with other projects like Red Dwarf, where he plays Dave Lister.

“I’m trying to keep all the plates spinning, really. Coronation Street have been really kind to me – they let me go off and do other things every now and again,” he explained.

He also said a new series of Red Dwarf could be on the cards.
“We did Red Dwarf X a couple of years ago and that went really well. It was really well received. It was a bit like going back in time, but within about five or 10 minutes, it was like we’d never been away. I know the lads are trying to make a Red Dwarf XI,” he added.
