Rob Mallard reveals why he wants his screen mum to return

Coronation Street star Rob Mallard, who plays Daniel, says he’d like Denise Black to make a return to the soap as his screen mum, Denise Osborne.

The actress made a guest appearance in June, when Daniel was revealed as the mystery person who had pushed Ken Barlow down the stairs. She was previously a permanent fixture on the cobbles from 1992 to 1997, and also appeared in the soap in 2007.

Rob said: “There’s a lot of story there, I think. When Denise Black was here, she stayed with me, and we were talking about this.

“The brilliant thing about this relationship is that at each stage of the ageing process, the way you interact with your mum changes. Once you get out from underneath them, you see them in a different way; you come out of that teenage tunnel of “ugh”, and you come out the other side. You need them in different ways at different stages.

“So, as Daniel ages and goes into different stages, I think those stories are going to be really interesting. Like maybe when he gets married or if he has a kid. Those are all moments where a mother would be in there, and those are the ones I’d like to play. Plus, I’d like to see Denise!’

The actor adds that he thinks Daniel’s anger towards Denise isn’t due to the fact that his mother abandoned him as a teenager.

“My belief is that the anger isn’t just because she left. I think that their lifestyle for the last few years they lived together was bad, and the anger was down to whatever happened between them. Whether it was her that did it or whether she brought someone else into the house and deliberately didn’t see something because of what she needed – which was maybe male company – I don’t know. But I think that’s where the real pain is.”
