Sue Cleaver talks about Eileen’s choice of husband for what will be her first-ever wedding – if she goes through with it in Corrie!
It’s been a long time coming but Eileen Grimshaw’s about to become a ‘Mrs’ for the first time… she hopes. Her husband-to-be is sociopath Pat Phelan, but she’s decided to marry him anyway.
“As far as she is concerned, Phelan’s not done anything wrong,” Corrie star Sue Cleaver tells Soaplife. Oh, but he has!
Why does Eileen set a wedding date so quickly?
“When she saw Phelan [Connor McIntyre] in hospital she felt she very nearly lost him so she is really anxious that everything is official, done and dusted. He’s looked after her more than anyone ever has and she thinks he’s the ideal partner. Eileen has said before that she would never be seen walking down the street with any of her boyfriends, let alone down an aisle! So this is a big thing for her. She’s been engaged before, but has never gone through with it.”
How does Todd feel?
“He’s not thrilled, but he’s with her at the Register Office. Todd [Bruno Langley] has always been very protective of his mum so Eileen just puts his doubts down to the fact that he’s never liked anybody she’s gone out with – but he is just going to have to put up with it.”
What kind of wedding is it?
“It’s very quiet because it would be very disrespectful to have a big wedding after everyone lost their money, so they’ve not made a big thing of it.”
Does Phelan have genuine feelings for Eileen?
“I think he does because he has looked after her. He didn’t need to marry her, there is nothing in it for him now the money has gone. Maybe they could have their happy ending.”
But Eileen finds herself waiting for him at the Register Office, doesn’t she?
“Yes. Everything always goes wrong for Eileen where relationships are concerned, so she starts to worry when he’s late.”
