Killer in the Family
Our families are supposed to be the ones we turn to in a
crisis and who will look after us no matter what.
So when we hear reports of people killing their
relatives, it's often a baffling crime. What leads someone to murder a member
of their family? And could anything have been done to stop them?
Shocking new crime series Killer in the Family finds out
when it explores some of the most shocking and puzzling family murders of
recent years.
In each episode leading criminal psychologist Laura
Richards, who was responsible for setting up the Homicide Prevention Unit at New
Scotland Yard, investigates a different case all with one thing in common - a
horrendous murder carried out by a family member.
Laura tries to find out what drives these killers to
carry out such cruel acts and speaks to surviving family members who knew both
killer and victim.
The cases include that of Philip Austin, a family man who
brutally stabbed, drugged and strangled his wife and two children in 2000; the
murder of Surjit Athwal who was killed in 1998 after an elaborate plan
concocted by her husband and mother-in-law; Christopher Hawkins who stabbed his
four year old son in front of his 14 year old daughter in 2007; and Andre
Genestin who beat his wife to death and kept her body in a car roof-box after
she refused to allow him to invite a Ukrainian woman, whom he met on the
internet, into their marriage.
