The 2010 series of Dancing On Ice has kicked off with this year’s female contestants skating competitively for the first time.
14 celebrities are taking part in this year’s show – with the seven male stars – including The Bill star Gary Lucy and TV medic Dr Hilary Jones – due to make their debut on the ice on next Sunday’s show.
This week, however, it was the female stars who were bidding to stay in the competition – beginning with Danniella Westbrook and her skating partner, show newcomer Matthew Gonzalez.
The pair got things off to an upbeat start with their routine to the dance hit Evacuate The Dancefloor – and they scored some good reviews from the judging panel, who gave them an impressive 17 points out of a possible 30.
Robin Cousins described their routine as “a fantastic first performance” while Karen Barber said it was “a great start to the show”.
Also winning praise from the judges was Emmerdale star Hayley Tamaddon, who finished top of the leader board with 19.5 points. The panel raved about her chemistry with skating partner Daniel Whiston, whom she knew as a child.
“I honestly thought I’d never see a performance like that on the first show,” said new judge Emma Bunton, while Jason Gardiner described the actress as “head and shoulders above what we’ve seen”.
Heather Mills and Sinitta didn’t do too badly either, each scoring half marks – but it wasn’t such good news for Sharron Davies and Tana Ramsay, both of whom found themselves in the lower reaches of the scoreboard.
“Romantic and expressive that was not,” Jason told Ramsay, while he was even less complimentary about Olympic swimmer Davies, giving her just 1.5 points – the lowest single score of the night.
“If I have to be honest you look possessed by a tree,” he complained. “I’ll be happy if you look human out there.”
And Inbetweeners star Emily Atack got off to a very rocky start, finishing bottom of the scoreboard with just 11 points.
“Looking lovely isn’t enough to get the marks up,” Nicky said, while Emma told her, “You look lovely but you didn’t skate much.”
The results will be revealed later on Sunday evening with the first celebrity leaving the competition following the skate-off.
