Shayne Ward has become the fifth celebrity to be eliminated from Dancing On ice 2013, after finding himself in the skate-off against series favourite Matt Lapinskas.
The former X Factor champion had fared well earlier in the show, picking up his highest score yet – and praise from the judges – for his performance with skating partner Maria Filippov.
However he proved unable to overcome Matt as both faced their first ‘Save me skate’ of the series.
And despite the EastEnders star suffering an unfortunate stumble mid-routine which left him in tears afterwards, the majority of judges still voted to keep him in the competition.
“This is a skate off that should never have been but I have to vote for the strongest overall and that should be Matt,” Karen Barber said, while Ashley Roberts and Robin Cousins also voted in his favour.
Only Jason Gardiner opted to save Shayne, saying: “The save me skate in my opinion has to be performed perfectly.”
Although Matt appeared clearly emotional at the outcome, Shayne accepted his defeat graciously, saying: “I’m devastated, but anyone that goes up against Matt, he’s always going to come out on top.”
He added: “You’ve been an amazing bunch, thank you guys.”
Sunday night’s show had seen Shayne score 25 out of 40 for his performance, with Ashley Roberts telling him: “I never thought I’d be turned on by a man in a pink bedazzled shirt.”
Shayne is the first male contestant to be given the boot from the show after four consecutive female celebrities – Pamela Anderson, Lauren Goodger, Oona King and Anthea Turner – were all voted off.
Beth Tweddle and Samia Ghadie – the only remaining women in the competition – made it safely through to next weekend along with Keith Chegwin, Joe Pasquale, Luke campbell and Gareth Thomas.
