Downton's Rob: 'Bates' trial is my chance' (VIDEO)
14/12/2011 - 17:15

Downton Abbey actor Rob James-Collier says Bates' downfall is his character Thomas Barrow's opportunity to get ahead in life.
Bates is facing trial for murder of his ex-wife in the Christmas Day special on ITV1 and devious first footman Thomas realises the Earl of Grantham may well soon be looking for a new valet.
Rob told whatsontv.co.uk: "I don't think he's happy that [Bates' arrest has] happened, I don't think he's that cruel, but ever the, looking for an opportunity, he sees Bates's downfall as his opportunity to get where he wants to in life, which is up the rung of the working ladder, so he wants to become valet to his Lordship... He sees it as his chance."
