Alex Kingston: 'I'm not a strong character'

Alex Kingston has admitted she doesn't understand why she is always cast as strong female characters, saying she's not that tough in real life.

The actress, who has played both Boudica and Moll Flanders, stars in new BBC drama Hope Springs as gang boss, Ellie Lagden.

Alex told Hope Springs' official website: "I don't know why I get cast as these women because I'm actually not very strong or tough myself.

"It's great because they are very nice parts, but I do wonder whether people expect me to be as strong as these characters. Maybe they do. Maybe that's what people think I am like? My God, I hope not."

Talking about her latest character, Alex said: "Ellie's another tough nut to crack and maybe her vulnerability doesn't show through as much as some of the other characters I've played, so yes, she's definitely another strong one to add to the list."

Hope Springs launches on BBC1 on Sunday June 7 at 8pm.
