Stephen Fry entertains fans while trapped in lift

QI host Stephen Fry might have become stuck in a lift this week, but he managed to entertain thousands of fans via his mobile phone.

The TV presenter, actor, comedian and writer was attending a Meet the Author event at London's 33-storey Centre Point building when an electrical fault caused the lift to jam. Stephen, 51, wrote on his Twitter blog: "Ok. This is now mad. I am stuck in a lift on the 26th floor of Centre Point. Hell's teeth. We could be here for hours. A**e, poo and widdle."

The 51-year-old has over 117,000 subscribers to his Twitter page and an estimated 108,000 Twitterers read his posts while he was stuck, and some posted messages back. He wrote: "Your brilliant comments are keeping us all (hysterically) cheerful. Last I heard engineers still on their way."

Stephen even posted a photo of himself with the other people trapped in the lift, along with a photo of the elevator display which read, 'This lift is not in use' and joked: "No s**t, Sherlock..."

After over half an hour he reassured fans: "We're free! Nice men from Thyssen freed us.

"Paramount Club had champagne for us at the bottom. I'm allergic, but nice thought.

"So many marvellous tweets from you sympathetic (and notably less so) peeps. Much appreciated."

The next morning Stephen again posted a message thanking his fellow Twitterers for helping him through his ordeal. He wrote: "Slept heavily after the frylift incident. Another thank you to all those who kept the Blitz spirit alive."
