Arthur Clennam returns to London

Arthur Clennam makes his way home to London after spending 15 years in China. In quarantine, in Marseilles, he meets Pet Meagles, who's also returning to England, and the two form a close bond. Meanwhile, Pet's companion, Tattycoram, is desperate to change her life and, when she meets the mysterious Miss Wade, she sees the chance to escape the humdrum...
Arriving back home in London, Arthur is surprised to find a young woman, Amy Dorrit, working for his stern mother. Arthur suspects that Amy's presence has something to do with his father's dying words: "Your mother, Arthur. Put it right!" and vows to uncover the connection between his father's guilt and the young woman.
Arthur's quest leads him to Marshalsea debtors' prison, where Amy lives with her father, William Dorrit, a long-term debtor who hasn't left the prison in 20 years. Amy appears happy with her lot as she looks after her father, brother, uncle and sister with such good grace. But Arthur's arrival is about to change Amy and her family's lives forever...
