The Dorrits leave Marshalsea prison
Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:00 BBC1

As the Dorrit family make their triumphant departure from the Marshalsea Debtors Prison, Arthur looks on in the knowledge that he might never see them again. Mr Dorrit orders that Amy's friendship with Arthur be brought to an end as he wants to leave the past, and everyone in it, behind him. Mr Dorrit wastes no time in employing Mrs General, to offer instruction in etiquette to his daughters.
Mrs General suggests that the family goes on a Grand Tour. But Amy refuses to leave the country without making sure that her friends – the poverty-stricken Plornishes and Maggy – are well-provided for. As Amy prepares for her future, Arthur and the cold-hearted Mrs Clennam consider how much they will miss her.
The first person that the Dorrits encounter on their Grand Tour is Rigaud, who is travelling with the newlywed Gowans. And the frenchman soon takes a keen interest in Amy, much to her discomfort...
