Brian plays it by the book

Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman and her team of old dogs investigate the sudden death three years earlier of Dr Richard Symes, a university boffin. It's like striking gold for Brian and he volunteers to go undercover at The London Library, where Symes was a frequent visitor.

Sandra and Gerry visit Symes's widow, Paula, who deals in antique books. She insists her husband jumped off the roof of the university because principal Jeremy Ventham forced him into early retirement.

Ventham tells Jack that Symes had been stealing books from the university library and his early retirement was a nice way of getting rid of him. Now why would book lover Symes steal? For his wife's business perhaps...

Retired lecturers Sophie Urquhart (Anne Reid – Ladies of Letters) and her husband Jasper (David Ryall – Grandad in Outnumbered) have been hanging around Brian at the library. They might be worth talking to...
