Craig among stars tipped for 'Sweeney' film

Daniel Craig and Ewan McGregor are among the big names being tipped to star in a movie version of 70s TV hit The Sweeney, according to the papers.

The News Of The World reports that Daniel - best known as the current James Bond - and Ewan have expressed 'huge interest' for playing the role of George Carter, which was made famous by Dennis Waterman in the show.

Tom Hardy and Orlando Bloom are also rumoured to be in the running for the part. Ray Winstone has reportedly already signed up to star as Detective Inspector Jack Regan - who was originally played by the late John Thaw.

"All four are keen on the role but whoever ends up doing it will change the movie's tone," a source told the paper.

"Ray's going to be great as Regan but the chemistry between him and Carter needs to be right."

"The success of Life On Mars shows there's a huge appetite for Seventies cop dramas," the insider added. "With the right cast The Sweeney could be even bigger."

Filming is set to begin later this year for a planned 2011 cinema release.

The original show ran from 1975-78 and spawned two spin-off films in 1977 and 1978.
