BBC1’s Spooks axed after a decade

The BBC has confirmed hit spy drama Spooks will end after the 10th series later this year.

The show follows the lives and intrigues of MI5 agents and launched shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

The chief executive of production company Kudos, Jane Featherstone, said although 'people still love the show' (with figures still reaching six million viewers) it 'now feels like the right time. We have always killed off characters at their peak and now we are doing it with the show.'

The series has been renowned for running particularly controversial storylines and bosses have promised a 'high octane thrilling finale.'

The final series is set to focus on 'Harry’s past, bringing his tumultuous relationship with Ruth to a head.'

Insiders have said the final series will wrap up unfinished issues from throughout the series.

Jane said: "We’ve followed the arc of their personal story and I think they have brought us to a natural end, which you will all see played out later this year."

“It feels like now is a good time for Spooks to bow out and make way for new spy dramas which reflect the changing world around us."

"There will be a brilliant ending with some remarkable people and surprises. Some blasts from the past might return. The ending will give the show a full stop."

“As we near the completion of this year’s show, it feels this series is a fitting end to a much-loved programme.”
