Spin-off series The Royal gets its OWN spin-off

ITV1's Sunday night family drama The Royal, originally a spin-off from Heartbeat, is getting its own daily spin-off series.

Fifty episodes of a 30-minute soap The Royal Today have been commissioned by ITV bosses, according to the Media Guardian.

The Royal Today will be set in the present day at the same fictional north Yorkshire hospital and town as The Royal and will feature many of The Royal's characters 40 years on.

One current Royal character reported to star in The Royal Today will be Lizzie Hopkirk, who will be in her 50s, while Dr Jonathan Ormerod will be the son of current Royal characters Dr Ormerod and Dr Jill Weatherill.

Writers from the The Royal will be working on scripts for the daytime spin-off, with shooting due to begin by late spring.
