Torchwood will stay true to Wales despite US move

Torchwood will never lose its Welsh roots despite much of the new series being filmed in the United States, says its creator.

Torchwood boss Russell T Davies said at the London launch of the 10-part series: "I would never do a Torchwood that didn't have any links to Wales."

Torchwood: Miracle Day is a US-UK co-production with major US stars Bill Pull man and Mekhi Pfeifer joining the british cast led by John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness).

According to BBC News, the new series imagines a world where suddenly nobody dies and much of the action takes place in the US, with scenes in Wales and other international locations.

BBC Wales is making Torchwood in partnership with US entertainment network Starz and BBC Worldwide.

"In a time when budgets are tight, it's great to have an infusion of cash from America that we can have fun with - and do some big brave stuff with," said Davies.

Executive producer Julie Gardner said: "We wanted to do a global threat with more than one location and the co-production enables that to be possible.

"The joy of it wasn't that we sold the format to the Americans and then waved goodbye to it.

"Of course budgets are shrinking, but it was about working smart. In pooling the money we got a bigger show for a better price."

The series screens in the US in early July and on BBC One a week later.
