Gwen’s back in south Wales where she reunites with husband Rhys and baby Anwen. She’s on a mission to rescue her ailing father from a highly guarded ‘overflow’ hospital camp near Cardiff – it’s being used to contain those who should be dead but are still hanging on because of the miracle. Lots of these mysterious camps have been set up around the world by sinister drugs company PhiCorp. Gwen’s just about to sneak her dad out of there without the army guards noticing, when he takes a turn for the worse. Has he been marked for incineration?
Dr Vera Juarez has been so troubled by the American government’s response to the Miracle Day events that she decides to join the Torchwood team in California. She and Rex soon infiltrate an ‘overflow’ camp to investigate what’s happening to patients there who are supposed to be dead but still alive thanks to the bizarre world phenomenon. Vera poses as a visiting doctor, while Rex goes in undercover as a patient. The secret mission goes spectacularly wrong, however, after Vera has a shocking showdown the camp’s head medic, Colin Maloney, and Torchwood lose contact with her. She’s been shot by Maloney and taken to some sort of storage unit. Rex looks about the camp for her, but is too late it seems, as Maloney has pulled the switched to have her incinerated.
Meanwhile, Jack catches up with Oswald Danes at a massive rally in Los Angeles, where the child killer proclaims that the Miracle Day has produced a new kind of human in the process of evolution. The crowds are believing him and going wild for his theories. Mr Danes has become a new Messiah, which delights his PR adviser Jilly Kitzinger. She and her client PhiCorp have big plans...
