The Middle Men

After the horrific discoveries made last week by Torchwood about what’s really going on at the hospital ‘overflow’ camps all over the world, team members Rex and Esther continue their undercover investigations at California’s San Pedro camp. Their colleague Dr Vera Jaurez is missing. While Rex saw her incinerated alive, Esther is desperate to find out what could have happened.

Rex is nosing around the complex in a soldier’s uniform when he’s captured and subjected to torture by the camp’s head medic, evil Colin Maloney. Esther has been working in Maloney’s office undercover and has been suspicious that’s he’s been up to no good for a while now.

Her suspicions lead her to look for him in the camp after she overhears that Rex has been taken prisoner. When she finally catches up with the pair, Maloney’s carrying out his brutal interrogation of Rex, so she has no option but to intervene. There’s a violent scrap between Esther and Maloney, which would be a fight to the death if only people could die! One of them will end up a vegetable, unable to die because of the Miracle Day events....

Meanwhile, Gwen’s in the Cowbridge overflow camp in Wales where her father’s been categorised for incineration. She and her husband Rhys get him out before he’s burnt alive, but when she gets back to California to rejoin Torchwood, she receives a shock. A mystery caller tells her they are holding Rhys and baby Anwen hostage back in Wales. She’s given an ultimatum – to bring them Jack Harkness, or something very nasty will happen to her family.

Jack has been busy catching up with Stuart Owens, who is the chief operating officer at PhiCorp and also having an affair with his secretary. The pair discuss the weird goings on at the dodgy pharmaceutical company, and whether the company knew about Miracle Day in advance. Stuart believes the company had been preparing for it five years before and they talk about a prediction by a reknowned Italian medic from the 1990s of something called ‘The Blessing’.
