The New World

A bizarre phenomenon has struck the world – humans have suddenly stopped dying. Dubbed 'Miracle Day' by the media, people are still ageing and getting hurt, but the world is soon in crisis as hospitals fill up and it's estimated that an overpopulated planet will go into meltdown in just four months.
When Miracle Day hits, Jack's in Washington DC, where he's been hiding out and secretly trying to eradicate all knowledge of Britain's alien-fighting organisation Torchwood, which was destroyed at the end of the last series. He knows the CIA is after Torchwood secrets but he's also doing it to protect Gwen, who is in hiding, too, in Wales with her husband Rhys and baby Anwen. But Gwen is still in a Torchwood frame of mind and on the alert all the time, keeping a big stash of weapons in her beachside cottage.
Meanwhile, the events of Miracle Day have some shock consequences for some. Child murderer Oswald Danes (played by Hollywood star Bill Pullman) survives his execution in Kenturky by lethal injection, then he’s let out of prison on a technicality. It causes a national outcry. And CIA agent Rex Matheson (played by ER star Mekhi Phifer) survives a bizarre traffic accident where he’s speared by a pole.
He gets up and walks out of hospital with a gaping hole in his chest. Rex and his colleague Esther Drummond are determined to track down the elusive former Torchwood members. Esther catches up with Jack, but he makes her drink something that makes her forget him and her Torchwood discoveries, while Rex heads for the secluded beach in Wales where Gwen lives in secret.
After a dramatic stand-off at Gwen's isolated cottage, with bullets and bazookas going off all over the place, there's a dramatic helicopter chase and the CIA catch up with Gwen. Luckily, Jack steps in to help her, but the pair eventually get caught and plans are made for their 'rendition' to America.
Jack also now realises that while everyone else in the world in immortal, he no longer is and is the only person in the world who can die. So are the 'Miracle Day' events anything to do with Jack?
