Absolutely Fabulous set for US remake

Patsy and Eddie are getting an American makeover in a new version of sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.

The remake will be set in Los Angeles and will feature a new cast.

Jennifer Saunders, who played Edina Monsoon alongside Joanna Lumley's Patsy Stone from 1992 to 2005, will act as executive producer on the US version.

The Fox series has an impressive production team, with the same creative team that worked on hit comedy Arrested Development, plus Saturday Night Live's Christine Zander as scriptwriter.

But Jon Plowman, executive producer of the original BBC series, has doubts that the show can be transplanted successfully to LA.

"The trouble with doing Ab Fab in America is that it will have to end with Edina and Saffy hugging, Patsy giving up drink and drugs, and them all hugging mum. It won't work. It'll be too nice," he told Broadcast. "Let's hope they get it right."

It is the second attempt to remake Absolutely Fabulous for American audiences. Roseanne Barr and Carrie Fisher starred in a pilot episode over 10 years ago, but the series didn't get the green light.

America will adore me, Darling!
