Choir winners launch Christmas chart bid

Last Choir Standing winners Only Men Aloud are to launch their own bid for the Christmas No 1 - and want to beat The X Factor winner to the top spot.

The 18-strong Welsh male group - who won the BBC One show in the summer - will release their double A-sided versions of All By Myself and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas on December 15.

And the bookies are so confident about them presenting a challenge to The X Factor winner for the top spot, they have already placed odds of 10-1 on them becoming the Christmas chart-toppers.

"The X Factor has killed the Christmas number one in the last few years, but at last we have a song that can take on the Cowell juggernaut," said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.

"Last year the X Factor winner fared extremely badly really. There's potential, if the wrong winner is chosen, that they will be beaten."

HMV's Gennaro Castaldo said he expected the single to be a "runaway success".

"Only Men Aloud have gained a huge fan base through Last Choir Standing and All By Myself is the classic song that helped them win the show."

Part of the proceeds from sales of the single will go to the homeless charity Shelter and its Welsh counterpart, Shelter Cymru.
