Red or Black crowns its first millionaire

ITV's new game show Red or Black produced its first millionaire as the much-hyped series got underway on Saturday night.

Nathan Hageman, a bricklayer from Reading, pocketed the massive cash prize after correctly guessing the outcome of the show's ten rounds.

The 31-year-old fought off competition from boxer Angel McKenzie - a former Big Brother contestant who appeared on the show in 2009 and who made it down to the final two on Saturday's show before being beaten by Nathan in the penultimate round.

He then had the chance to spin the Red or Black wheel in the final - and won the £1m after correctly predicting it would stop on a red square.

Afterwards he was overcome with emotion, appearing unable to believe that he had won. "I didn't think I would get through, I couldn't believe it," he said. "This means everything to me, I can change mine and my family's life."

Saturday's series opener saw contestants guessing the outcome of a series of complex stunts and other games - eventually being whittled down to the final eight who took part in the live part of the show at Wembley Arena.

Guest stars in the first edition included David Hasselhoff - who took part in a bungee jumping stunt - and Leona Lewis who performed her new single Collide.

The big-budget show - from Simon Cowell's company Syco - is the most expensive game show in British TV history with a budget of around £7m.

It will run every night for the next week - with one finalist getting the chance to make a million on each show.
