Simon Amstell quits 'Buzzcocks'

Comedian Simon Amstell is stepping down as the host of celebrity music quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks, according to the papers.

The Sun reports that the 29-year-old will quit the show to work on other projects, including another programme for the BBC.

"Simon is a funny guy who can think on his feet but he has decided it is time to move on," an insider told the paper.

"He is working on a new project that has been commissioned by the BBC and he wants to concentrate on that."

"He has completely revitalised the show and we will be sad to see him go," added a BBC source.

Simon, formerly host of Channel 4's Popworld, replaced Mark Lamarr as presenter of the show in 2006.

He was responsible for some classic moments, including the edition in which Ordinary Boys singer Preston stormed off set after Simon poked fun at his then wife Chantelle Houghton.

Preston took offence after Simon read an extract from Chantelle's book in which she said that wearing clothes from Marks and Spencer made her feel "upmarket".

The singer said afterwards, "If I'd had to look at his snotty little public schoolboy failed career face, I'd have hit him."

Simon will be replaced on the show when it returns in the autumn by a rolling rota of guest presenters rather than a new permanent host.
