Young British stars among Golden Globe nominees

Three young British stars Romola Garai, Hayley Atwell and Kelly Macdonald have been nominated alongside Hugh Laurie and Judi Dench in the 2011 Golden Globes.

Romola Garai for Emma, Hayley Atwell for Pillars Of The Earth and Dame Judi Dench for Return to Cranford have been nominated for best performance by an actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television.

Scottish star Kelly Macdonald is up for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a series, mini-series of motion picture made for television for her role in new American show Boardwalk Empire. Hugh Laurie received yet another nomination for best performance by an actor in a television series for his role in medical drama House.

Musical-comedy Glee picked up an impressive five Golden Globe nominations with Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison up for best actress and actor in a television series, comedy or musical. Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer are up for best performances in supporting roles while the show itself faces competition from 30 Rock and Modern Family in the best television series, comedy and musical category.

Also nominated were Mad Men's John Hamm and Elisabeth Moss, The Good Wife's Julianna Margulies, who won the best performance by an actress in a television series award last year, and Steve Carell for the US version of The Office.

In the running for best television series is Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, The Good Wife, Mad Men and new series staring Brit Andrew Lincoln The Walking Dead.

Nominations in the film categories included Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The King's Speech and The Social Network.

In the running for best performance by an actress in a motion picture is Halle Berry for Frankie and Alice, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone, Natalie Portman for Black Swan and Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine.

Hoping to clinch the best performance by an actor in a motion picture is Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network, Colin Firth for The King's Speech, James Franco for 127 Hours, Ryan Gosling for Blue Valentine and Mark Wahlberg for The Fighter.
