EastEnders bade a sad and emotional farewell tonight to Lee Carter who, after all his troubles, decided he was moving to Dover for a more settled life away from Whitney and his family

We’re definitely going to miss Lee Carter now he’s left EastEnders. Yes he may have been full of troubles and have done some very stupid things during his time in Walford, but essentially he has a heart of gold somewhere within.

We’d like to wish Lee, and actor Danny-Boy Hatchard, the best of luck. As a tribute, here are some of the biggest moments in Lee Carter’s roller-coaster life in Walford…

Soldier hero!
Lee was always mentioned proudly by mum and dad Linda and Mick before he even appeared. Both would beam with pride that their beloved eldest son was serving in the army. Lee then turned up in April 2014 to a hero’s welcome by his family. When brother Johnny came out as gay to him, he was full of understanding and good advice, and it wasn’t long before Lee grabbed the attention of the young women in Albert Square…

Murder suspect
Lee was the last person to spend the night with Lucy Beale before her dead body was found on Walford Common in April 2014, so he became a major suspect in the long-running murder inquiry. Although Lee had slept with Lucy, he wasn’t involved in her killing – that was Bobby Beale’s doing – so his angst over this was thankfully short-lived.

Up for a fight…
Lee had a notoriously short fuse and was quick to throw a punch or two if he felt anyone was wronged. When Ben Mitchell was being particularly horrid and homophobic to his brother Johnny, Lee was the first to steam in and teach then closet-case Ben a lesson…

Troubled lad
Lee always struggled with what he experienced as a soldier in the Middle East, with friends killed in front of him. He spiralled into a depression that he tried to hide, but then after admitting his troubles to his family, he eventually sought help. But his depression has always been at the root of his problems, whether in his relationship with Whitney  or his money problems leading to horrendous decisions (setting up the robbery of his parents’ pub was a low point). His near suicide was only averted by the kindness of a car park attendant.

Fun times
Lee could always put on a brave face and look like he was enjoying himself. His Halloween costumes were always amazing and his stag do saw plenty of revelry. But of course there was always sadness behind the smiles…

Whitney woes
With Lee’s depression dominating his life, his relationship with Whitney was never going to be easy. The loss of their unborn baby was a huge blow, as was her ‘mini fling’ with his dad Mick, but Lee and Whitney stuck it out and got married. Alas it wasn’t meant to be…

Could Lee come back?
Is this really the last we see of Lee? He’s only gone to Kent after all? Plenty of characters have made their way back over the years. We’re certainly hoping that might be the case…
