The son of a stockbroker, writer-director Nicholas Jarecki brings inside knowledge to this slick and suspenseful thriller about a crooked New York hedge-fund magnate striving to keep his fiscal and other wrongdoings from the attention of the authorities and his own family. Dangerously charismatic, Richard Gere is on top form as the financier and gets sterling support from Susan Sarandon as his loyal wife and Tim Roth as the cop determined to bring him to book. It’s an all-round good film, but its moral ambiguity leaves a sour taste.
