Neglected by her busy, distracted parents in their new house, young Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning) is bored. Then she finds a secret door that leads to an ideal parallel world where she is doted on, but is it too good to be true? She soon discovers there’s a darker side to the place where people have buttons instead of eyes… Director Henry Selick’s delightful stop-motion animation is breathtaking and the film treads a clever line between goofy and ghoulish. The hilarious vocals of Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, as a pair of faded divas, are inspired, as is the stand-out sequence set in a theatre full of Scotty dogs. Packed with surreal wonders and eccentric characters, this film is a joy.
