Exactly how does Santa deliver all those presents in a single night? This enormously entertaining animated comedy answers this question – and many more besides – with wit, charm and ingenuity.

Apparently, Santa (voiced by Jim Broadbent) leaves it to his eldest son (Hugh Laurie), who runs the slick, hi-tech present-delivery operation with the help of a mile-wide sleigh and a million elves.

That is, until a glitch means a child in a Cornish village accidentally misses out on her present – so clumsy younger brother Arthur (James McAvoy), doddering Grandsanta (Bill Nighy) and a lowly elf (Ashley Jensen) have to join forces to finish the job.

This is a warmhearted gift of a movie, stuffed with so many delights that it will keep on giving over many Christmas viewings to come.
