This terrific series ends with the stories of actor Ricky Tomlinson, midwife Julia Allison and betting shop millionaire Victor Young, all born on 26 September 1939. All three eventually realised their ambitions but endured hardship on the way. For Ricky, this involved a controversial jail spell in 1973 – he’s still fighting to overturn his conviction – before finding fame in Brookside and The Royle Family, while Victor fell at the final hurdle in his bid to become a jockey. Fascinating social history, full of insight into the lives of a generation born as World War Two broke out.
