Puny Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) becomes pumped-up superhero Captain America in this sparkling fantasy.

It’s World War Two and scientist Stanley Tucci thinks that plucky Brooklyn youngster Rogers is the ideal candidate for his new experimental serum – and it works, with Rogers turning into a strapping supersoldier.

Dubbed Captain America, he is consigned to morale-boosting propaganda tours, but when his best friend is captured at the front, he joins the fray, armed with his trademark shield.

With its lovingly rendered period settings and costumes, this movie has a delightfully nostalgic feel, but the special effects are right up to date – especially nifty is the way they make Evans seem look so scrawny in the early scenes.

Hayley Atwell shines as his British agent love interest, while Hugo Weaving makes the most of his megalomaniac-Nazi villain role, The Red Skull.

A rollicking, stylish and well-played adventure.
