Neglected by her parents, bored young Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning) finds a secret door in her new house that leads to an ideal parallel world – or is it..?

The delightful stop-motion animation from Henry Selick is breathtaking and the film treads a fine line between goofy and ghoulish.

The hilarious vocals of Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, as a pair of faded divas, make the movie, as does the inspired sequence set in a theatre full of Scotty dogs.

Packed with surreal wonders and eccentric characters, this film is a joy, but it may be a tiny bit scary for tots.
