Jo Brand’s latest sitcom, which centres on social workers, is very much in the same vein as her brilliantly incisive and darkly funny comedy Getting On, about medical staff on a geriatric ward.

Brand, who created Damned with Morwenna Banks, stars alongside Alan Davies as social workers for the over-stretched children’s services. The wry humour derives from the characters trying to do their best against the odds and in the face of absurd bureaucracy.

There are moments of heartbreaking poignancy as the caring professionals, with their own messy personal lives, try to help those with far worse problems.
