‘No wonder so many souls expire here – they die from tedium,’ complains high-born new arrival Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick) in this week’s second episode of the epic period drama set in 17th-century Virginia.

But with a witch hunt, a suspected poisoning, a public health scare, a fraud investigation, a woman in the stocks and love rivals brawling in the street in Jamestown, you’d think there was more than enough to occupy Jocelyn’s devious mind.

The pot is now boiling nicely, and the prospects of fellow newcomer Alice (Peaky Blinders’ Sophie Rundle) and Silas (Stuart Martin, Medici: Masters of Florence) getting their happy-ever-after are looking increasingly slim.
