With our busy digital lives, watching this series about often long-neglected skills has the same effect as a long soak in the bath – calming, restoring and totally absorbing.

Martha Kearney presents as we join two groups of novices who are learning a new craft.

First up is hooky rug making, which is basically painting a picture with material on a stretched piece of hessian. Based on the Northumberland coast, six novices in Bamburgh create absolutely stunning seat cushions.

The second craft is letterpress. A group of five beginners use individual letters to create profound and meaningful messages. Relaxing, soothing and gently informative, it’s a great way to while away an hour.
