Ladette Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) is a scruffy FBI agent who goes undercover as a contestant in the Miss United States beauty pageant to track down a terrorist calling himself The Citizen. Gracie needs a great deal of grooming before she can be convincing as a contestant, so the organisers of the show (William Shatner and Candice Bergen) hire beauty pageant consultant Michael Caine to help out. Caine enjoys himself, giving a camp performance as he transforms her from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan, who catches the eye of colleague Benjamin Bratt. Bullock is at her effortless comic best and the movie is hugely entertaining in its daft way, though the uncertain tone – wavering between comedy, thriller, romance and buddy movie – does jar at times.
