Based on a scheme in America that has been running for over 25 years, 10 four-year-olds and a group of old people are brought together in this two-part series.

The aim is to see if mixing with the youngsters improves the mental and physical abilities of the OAPs. Most of the elderly participants say their life is dull and unexciting, but can the children cheer them up with their natural enthusiasm and joy for life?

The experiment will last for six weeks and the initial results seem positive.

One gentleman in particular, Hamish, 89, stays hidden behind his paper, but by week three is playing sleeping lions, surrounded by giggling little people.

Concludes tomorrow.
