In recent weeks, the Rio de Janeiro Olympics has been overshadowed by press coverage of
the Zika virus and the doping scandal surrounding Russian athletes. But after tonight we can finally concentrate on the Games as the opening ceremony takes place in the Maracanã Stadium. There’s a four-hour time difference between here and Rio, so UK viewers will have to stay up late or record it. It’s hard to say if it’ll be worth it – if Brazilian film director Fernando Meirelles does half as good a job as London 2012’s creative director Danny Boyle did it will be – but to keep you entertained there’s a 90-minute warm-up earlier in the evening (8.30pm).
