Johnny Simmons plays a baseball prodigy who comes unstuck and has to come to terms with his past in this psychological sporting drama.

Ethan Hawke, making a habit of playing flawed fathers (Boyhood and 10,000 Saints), is his toxic dad, a bullying ex-con whose malign influence has derailed his son’s rise from high-school star to the major leagues.

Simmons does a fine job as the troubled young sportsman and so does Paul Giamatti as the therapist striving to sort out his issues.

Hawke may have less screen time than either of them, but it is his warped machismo that dominates the movie.
