Brie Larson heads the cast of this well-acted film set in a California foster-care facility for at-risk adolescents.

Probing its characters’ emotionally turbulent lives with sensitivity, insight and compassion, this is a compelling drama.

And it’s not just the kids who are troubled. Beneath her calm and competent surface, Larson’s twentysomething supervisor is just as damaged as her charges.

The admittance to the unit of a self-harming teenager (Kaitlyn Dever) sparks a series of crises, laying bare the lingering impact of childhood trauma, before writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton wraps things up with a fittingly redemptive close.

Screening at 12.40am on BBC1 Northern Ireland, 12.45am on BBC1 Scotland and Wales.
