Alex Polizzi’s journey through the centre of Spain this week takes her from the opulence of Madrid’s Palacio Real and the less well-known Museo Cerralbo (which she calls ‘a real find’) to an unfinished cathedral built from recycled materials by a 92-year-old in Mejorada del Campo.

Alex also manages to fit in a Madrileño breakfast of chocolate and churros in the famous Chocolatería San Ginés, and a visit to the windmills of Consuegra, featured in Cervantes’ Don Quixote.

Then it’s on to Salamanca, where Alex is literally swept off her feet by one of the ‘tuna’ musicians (local student minstrels) in the university city’s beautiful Plaza Mayor.
