A fun family film, fizzing with kung fu action from the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li and boasting an engaging story.

Michael Angarano is ideal as a gutsy US teen who’s transported to ancient China on a dangerous mission and befriends a twinkly eyed Chan and more sombre Li.

Paired together for the first time, the martial arts aces are well used as older mentor characters when Angarano sets off on a quest to free the Monkey King (also Li) and Liu Yifel is also outstanding as an orphaned assassin.

Director Rob Minkoff’s lovely adventure gets the tone just right without resorting to silliness and it looks magnificent, too, filmed on location in China, while the amazing special effects, dynamic, fast-paced action and endless good humour add to the appeal.
