A trainee vet (Ellie Kendrick) reluctantly returns to her family’s failing farm following her brother’s death in this dour, well-made drama.
Set in the Somerset Levels in the aftermath of the devastating floods of 2014, writer-director Hope Dickson Leach’s debut feature film is appropriately damp and dark.
Kendrick’s Clover is bristling with anger, anguish, resentment and guilt on her return. There are buried badgers on the land, and buried secrets, too, but Clover’s estranged father, ex-military officer Aubrey (David Troughton), seems in bluff denial about the family’s parlous situation.
The emotions here are largely submerged, but the drama is anything but soggy.
This movie premieres on Monday 5 March.
